Experiences of a 1st Year Accountant at BS&P by Jeremy Bilson

Some people often ask me, what do you do at work? How are the partners? Co-workers? Finally, do accountants know how to have fun? As a first year accountant who has also interned here for the past two tax seasons, I was asked to address these questions for those interested in learning more about our firm. Read on…..

First, the question that most people have. What is it that you do at work? The answer is, a little bit of everything. From taxes for both individuals and businesses, going out on audits, assisting with tax planners for individuals looking to make investments, and helping out with various firm events (such as the college recruiting committee). Also I want to address the common misconception that all accountants work 80 hours a week during tax season and never see their significant others, kids, etc. During tax season the average amount of time put in a week, here at BS&P, is 50.5 hours and that fluctuates as we get closer to the March 15th and April 15th deadlines.

Second, the partners here at BS&P. There is a common misconception amongst potential accountants that partners are these intimidating people that you can’t talk to unless it’s absolutely necessary. I will admit, I was one of those people. But within my first week of interning here I learned that it’s not true; at least here it’s not. The partners all take the time to get to know the staff and also are willing to answer any questions that you may have. It’s not intimidating at all to go to their office and ask a question about a client. They have an open-door policy that they truly believe is for the betterment of all of their employees.

Next, a little bit of information about my co-workers at BS&P. The people here are very easy to talk to and will also answer any questions you may have. Whether it’s where can I find a pencil, or can you show me how to sync a client to my computer, you will always get an answer. (It also doesn’t hurt if you have a bag full of M&M’s at your desk either.)

Finally, what some people view as the selling point, do accountants have fun? The answer is YES. Here is an idea of some of the events that we have at our firm:

  • Birthday Cakes on Employee Birthdays
  • March 15th Party
  • April 15th Party
  • Summer Picnic

If you have any questions or comments about my experiences so far here at BS&P, please feel free to leave a question or comment below and I will respond ASAP!

Thanks, Jeremy Bilson
