James E. Ahne

Jim has been an integral part of BS&P since 1995, bringing more than three decades of institutional knowledge and operational leadership to the firm. As Chief Operating Officer, he has played a pivotal role in guiding BS&P through the many technological and operational transformations that have shaped the modern accounting profession.

Originally trained in accounting, Jim began his career working with private companies in industries such as architecture and manufacturing, where he focused on cost accounting, internal audit, and the development of computer-generated cost reporting systems. While working at Southwestern Bell Paging, he transitioned from accounting into operations management, an experience that would ultimately shape his career path. He shortly thereafter relocated to Buffalo and joined BS&P.

With long-standing interest in technology and process improvement, Jim helped lead the firm through major tech shifts, from early network infrastructure and internet connectivity to the adoption of cloud-based applications, enhanced security protocols, and modern client portal systems. Even in the early days of spreadsheet technology, working in programs like Lotus 1-2-3 before the rise of Microsoft Excel, Jim recognized the potential for technology to transform how work gets done.

Over the years, his role expanded beyond technology and operations. Jim has worked closely with firm leadership on strategic initiatives, supported partners in financial and operational planning, and leads the firm’s administrative team. His calm, solutions-oriented leadership style is grounded in active listening and thoughtful problem-solving, whether guiding us through a major system migration or helping a team member resolve an everyday challenge.

When he’s not in the office, Jim enjoys spending time outdoors, with a particular penchant for fly fishing and hiking. He also loves to travel and explore new places whenever he has the chance.
