Effective Immediately for Individual Tax Returns

Home /

In an effort to protect taxpayers from identity theft, for tax year 2016 New York State is requiring that taxpayers provide information from either their driver’s license or state-issued ID for all personal income tax returns prepared and electronically filed using software. This information will be part of the electronic file submitted to New York State, but will not be visible anywhere on the New York State return.

For our clients that file a New York State return, we will need the following information:

Effective Immediately for Individual Tax Returns

We will need this information for both the taxpayer and spouse for jointly filed returns. If the filer does not have either a driver’s license or a NYS issued ID card, then we can indicate there is no ID available for that person.

If this information is not provided, it can delay the processing of your return and/or refund, and you may receive correspondence from NYS regarding the matter.

We recently mailed your tax organizers to you, there is a place in the organizer for you to complete this information, or if you would prefer to send us a copy of your driver’s licenses, we can gather the information from that.

For further information please see https://www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/pit/driver-license-requirements.pdf or contact us at 716-854-5034 or info@bspcpa.com if you have any questions.
