Dave joined the firm in 1980, just after graduating from the University of Dayton and only a few years after BS&P was founded in 1972. He began his career as a staff accountant, working closely with the firm’s founders in those early years to help grow the business and shape BS&P’s enduring culture, rooted in a true sense of family.
Dave swiftly moved up the ladder and was then promoted to firm partner. Over the decades that followed, he emerged as a trusted leader and an important throughline between the firm’s origins and its future. His ethos, centered on integrity, relationships, and exceeding client expectations, reflects the very foundation on which BS&P was built.
Throughout his tenure, Dave worked with clients across a wide range of industries, honing particular expertise with licensed professional service organizations and medical practices. He was instrumental in shaping BS&P’s specialization in employee benefit plans and retirement plans, acting as the firm’s “go-to” resource for the most complex plan questions, easily able to analyze and explain in simplified terms. His technical strengths also lie in personal and business tax services, but it is his role as a trusted advisor that truly defines his career. Many of Dave’s clients have worked with him for decades, some since his earliest years at the firm, relying on his guidance through business growth, life changes, and long-term planning.
Dave has always believed in the value of personal connection. He is “old school” in the best sense, preferring face-to-face meetings, giving his full attention, and truly knowing his clients beyond the numbers. He has been a steady, trusted presence in their lives, earning loyalty through genuine care and consistency.
BS&P’s Chief Human Resources Officer Caroline Organ recalls: “Dave was the type of partner who would do anything for his clients. He has developed special, enduring relationships with them. It would not be surprising to find Dave driving a client to the airport or helping with the most personal matters.”
Internally, Dave has worn many hats over the years, stepping into leadership roles wherever the firm needed him, including overseeing business development and marketing efforts during pivotal periods of growth. Equally meaningful is Dave’s legacy as a mentor. He has guided and shaped countless professionals at BS&P, emphasizing not only technical expertise but the importance of relationships, service, and building a strong professional community. Dave’s door was always open to staff, even at the busiest of times. He never gave the impression that he was too busy to help. A testament to the lasting influence of his leadership, one of Dave’s mentees is now the firm’s current managing partner, Raymond Crane, who remembers: “Dave was always willing to take extra time to listen to my questions and to give meaningful and practical solutions.”
Outside of BS&P, Dave has also contributed his time to numerous community organizations, assuming leadership positions with Boy Scouts of America, Knights of Columbus, and Erie County Medical Center Foundation.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Dave was honored with a Service Award at the firm’s dinner last fall.
While Dave’s day-to-day presence will be deeply missed, we are fortunate that he will continue with the firm in a consultative capacity, ensuring a thoughtful transition for his clients and allowing the firm to continue to benefit from his expertise and insight.
As Dave begins this next chapter, we wish him nothing but the best. We know he looks forward to spending more time with his beautiful family – his wife, children, and growing brood of grandchildren.
Thank you, Dave, for 45 remarkable years of leadership, service, and heart.
